Green, Greener, Delhi

Posted in Environment by dullar on April 25, 2007

Is it believable that Delhi has 22% of land cover as forest and trees? Well thats, to be released, Forest Survey of India report says. According to it of the 1483 sq km of total geographical area of delhi, 326sq km is forest cover. It is not clear as what is the definition of forest area that this survey takes into account but it says that only trees of certain heights are included in tree cover.

At the same time survey also mentions that increase in city’s forest cover has been phenomenally as high as 15% in last two years. Looking at the various developmental works going on in Delhi since past many years, all these facts looks elusive. Green Delhi drive, compensatory tree plantation, works of conservation and tree plantations by NGOs and public at large must be the reason for this turn around in Delhi’s green cover. It is to be noted that in 2001, the green cover in Delhi was only 10.2%.
